The Western Challenge

May is galloping by and I've only just now gotten started on C.B's Western challenge. This morning, I cracked open Willa Cather's My Antonia. Except for the short story "Paul's Case", I haven't read any of Cather's work. I can't believe my oversight; this is beautiful stuff. I'm her newest fan.

I think you'll like it. It's an excellent book. Oh! Pioneers is also wonderful. Glad to have you along for my little challenge.

I just got my first western review posted yesterday, myself.

NPR had a blurb on Willa Cather the other day urging us all to read her, particularly if High School was our only exposure. Which would be me. So now two of you! I have to check her out. Again. (Here's hoping she fares better than Wuthering Heights. OMG. What awful people).

So excited that you're reading "My Antonia"! I read it just a year or two ago, and I positively ached with nostalgia for weeks thereafter.

I read my first Willa Cather novel, "Death Comes to the Archbishop", while traveling through New Mexico. Seeing and being in the setting while reading her novel of the past just enhanced the trip and the story.

I read "My Antonia" last year with Joo Young Park. We both liked and appreciated the narrative style of Cather. I think I found meaning in it through Virgils "Georgics", or something weird like that. I can't remember now, maybe Joo Young can.

Love Cather, too! First read her in junior high school, then revisited as an adult and really appreciated her. O Pioneers and My Antonia are favorites. I have Death Comes to the Archbishop in that huge pile next to the bed that threatens to overcome me...
