2011: Bookish Resolve

Although we are several days into 2011, I don't feel I'm too late to make my book resolutions. I didn't always feel this way. I figured if you didn't get it done on January 1, (hangovers were no excuse) you missed the boat for that year and had to go through the next 12 months grubby and unresolved.

Then I moved to Asia and discovered Seollal, which is how Koreans refer to the lunar new year, which sometimes doesn't show up until mid-February. This year it's February 3. Thanks to getting a second shot at a new year, I have time for seventeen hangovers if I wish and then I can sprawl all over January, doing a year-end update here, taking a nap, getting a snack, looking for the back scratcher, watching TV, languidly making a resolution or two there...you get the idea.

So, I've gotten all my resolutions together rather early in this little crevice of time between the two new years, and I'm feeling like I'm the queen of time management. Mentally, I'm feeling pretty damn tidy. You could eat off of my cerebellum. Here's my list:

1. Read for charity. I'll go a penny a page again.

2. Read for challenges:

100+ Challenge

The Pulitzer Challenge

The Newbery Challenge

The Canadian Challenge - 4 down, 9 to go before July 1.

The Support Your Local Library Challenge - I'll try for 20 this year.

Mad Men Challenge - books from the late 50s and early 60s.

The TBR Dare

Read the Book, See the Movie Challenge - I've had a lot of fun with this one.

The Western Challenge - starts in May

3. Read internationally.

4. Participate in both the April and October 24-hour Readathons.

5. Read more books written before 1900.

6. Read Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The unsanitized version.

7. Curtail book spending - this is going to hurt...

8. Don't hesitate to DNF. Give it till page 49 then Zzzzzt! The Russian front!

Good luck on your resolutions, especially #7. Ack...that's a tough one) :) I've got a similar DNF strategy, only sometimes I give it until page 100 or even 200 if it's a chunkster. I've heard that reading pages 50 & 100 often predict how you will feel about the entire book. Not sure if that's true but it certainly helps me decide if it's a DNF or not ;)

LOL

I've gotten much better at DNFing books too, although I'm almost done w a book right now that I should have cut off ages ago. *sigh*

Sometimes I will still finish a book that doesn't deserve the effort, but I'm much better at abandonment than I used to be. Spending--always a problem, even with the aid of the library!

Any time is a good time for resolutions, I think. And such good reasoning!

Good luck with the challenges! I'm so drawn to them but just thinking of joining them kills my desire to read the book. Weird.

I am happily resolution free on the book front. Although I'm going to try to read AT LEAST 2 books from the TBR pile for each new book I get.

Great resolutions! Good luck with #7 I don't think I could do it. I love that you plan to read the uncensored Huckleberry Finn this year, I think I'll do that too.

the only resolution i made was to have fun reading and blogging--i actually borrowed that one from nicole at linus's blanket! i can't put too much pressure on myself or reading and blogging becomes such a chore. wishing you luck with your resolutions and happy 2011! :)

Dear Queen of Time Management: Look, you even have your goals numbered!!! My goals are changing too rapidly like leaves on the wind....shiny sparkly things....where was I? oh yes, your bookish resolve this year. But....buying fewer books this year? Oh booktwin! One part of me is proud of you, the other part wants to see you succumb to book lust like the rest of us! You buy the most interesting books!

Your Time Management Challenged Book-Twin in Ottawa (how many book resolves do I have now?)

Slog through just 49 pages to DNF? Way to go! I force myself to endure 100 pages before I give up. Explains why my annual reading totals are so small. Think I will adopt your practice. Thanks! :o)

Your 2011 bookish resolutions sound *sound*. Also, I like your new approach of easing into the resolutions as the year begins, instead of thinking of Jan. 1 as some super-special starting line.
