When I was reading Virginia Woolf’s edited diaries I made a note of all the references she made to what she was reading and the list almost filled a small notebook! I quite often read about her regret at not being able to be educated in the same way as her brothers yet what she had read by the time she was 15 or 16 is really rather impressive! I only became a Reader 5 years ago when I began commuting to work so already feel like I am playing catch up but her reading list is quite impressive and something to aim for.

You post has encouraged me to go back to her complete diaries (I have volume one sitting on my desk waiting to be read) and have another read through

Thanks

FloFlohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10312538685856436794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604938.post-26219392866359973552010-03-30T10:56:22.494-07:002010-03-30T10:56:22.494-07:00Nice review. I've never been able to make it all the way through a Virgina Woolf book but your enthusiasm and obvious love for her work makes me want to give her another shot. Maybe it will "click" this time.Sam https://www.blogger.com/profile/17448913705757509608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604938.post-69456536236512950402010-03-30T03:37:13.058-07:002010-03-30T03:37:13.058-07:00What a lovely article - I have to admit that Virgi...What a lovely article - I have to admit that Virginia Woolf is one one of those writers that doesn't interest me and I've never been tempted to read her books. Seeing her as a reader did spark abit of interest though.Jessicahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08861424110678889637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604938.post-51395306684338096242010-03-29T05:46:07.683-07:002010-03-29T05:46:07.683-07:00Oh dear! I agree with you...I love VW more as a book critic or memoirist than I do as a novelist.
Thanks for wanting to put my post in your journal...that's how I felt about that whole chapter...wanted to photocopy it and stick it in my reading journal!Bybeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10061186489010154661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604938.post-19500220047351211272010-03-26T18:43:24.991-07:002010-03-26T18:43:24.991-07:00Oh lovely review, Book-twin! I like the book critic/non-fiction writer better than her fiction, as much as it hurts me to say! I want to like her books, and certain passages I do, but overall they leave me cold. And i hate it! but maybe she would understand, from what Hermione Lee and you have written.....because it's that gulf between what she pictured in her mind and what she was able to write, that I also struggle with, so we could have talked about writing, at least, if she were alive!

I love her thoughts about books, and how Lee perceives them.....she loved books, and somehow that makes our love of books all the more acceptable, doesn't it? I'm going to have to look for this book, I think, and I've even considered reading her journals!!! So I'm not a hopeless reject yet! lol

REally lovely, this post. I might have to print it out just to keep a copy of it in my own journal! that's how good it is!!Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09095246748581382752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6604938.post-13031789457104600902010-03-26T09:40:45.300-07:002010-03-26T09:40:45.300-07:00Thanks for the review! Thanks for the review!Tribute Bookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16959016294721462184noreply@blogger.com
